life 169Merriam-Webster Dictionary provides one definition of the word “empower” that I would like to speak to in this essay, which is, “to promote the self-actualization or influence of”. I believe Reiki energy provides an opportunity for each of us to empower ourselves. We live in an extremely complex society with high expectations and enormous pressures. Most people live their lives attempting to meet the standards of others, namely family, neighbors and friends, bosses and colleagues, teachers, police, or society in general. They take their direction from outside influences which are often well-intentioned, but can also create enormous stress.  The assumptions of family members on how to live one’s life, be they traditions, or wants and/or needs can limit available options. Behavioral, marriage, career, and social expectations can define a person in ways he or she may not want.

What does it mean to be self-empowered? Just as was quoted above: self-actualization. When self-actualized, a person knows a great deal about himself. He understands his strengths and weaknesses, defines his own “shoulds” and “oughts”, goes within himself to find the guidance he needs, follows a path that utilizes his best attributes, and trusts in himself and his connection to Source. When empowered, he understands his life is his own, that he, and he alone, is responsible for how he lives it. Can he take guidance from others? Certainly, as long as that guidance resonates with him and it makes sense in his life journey. Ultimately, however, he makes the decisions that make the most sense for him, regardless of the opinions of others.

How can Reiki help empower a person? Reiki energy is Universal Life Force Energy. It is pure, powerful, and loving. When a person accepts this energy into his life, it works with him for his highest good. Any pain, resistance, or unhappiness a person feels is an indication that the energy circulating within the body has somehow become unbalanced. It is due to living life contrary to that person’s highest needs and purpose. This can occur on any and all levels of existence: physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual.
