The following is a poem about the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in Newtown, CT:
Reflections on 12-14-12
We weep with a deep sadness
that will not abate.
Our young ones are gone
as well as their guardians.
Our hearts are broken.
So many have lost so much.
Each of us is enmeshed in this tragedy.
Yet every day, others face death
on city streets, in broken homes.
Their stories lack sensation
but their loss is no less.
Our hearts should be broken.
Too many have forfeited too much.
Each of us is enmeshed in those tragedies.
Why, we ask? Why are they gone?
Does the right to take life so easily,
and brutally belong to anyone?
Such abundance of anger and hate. Release it.
Put away the killing weapons.
Too many have ruined too much.
Each of us is enmeshed with each other.
We have an obligation to care for one another.
We are our brothers’ keeper. We are all one.
Begin the healing.
Bring it from the heart through compassion,
understanding, respect, and equanimity
for those of all colors, ages, genders, and ethnicities.
Each of us is enmeshed with the other.
This season is one of light and peace,
yet it has been shattered.
Let us work toward repairing this darkness together.
Begin by seeking the higher good in every person encountered.
Listen, learn from, and assist your brother.
Let there be peace on Earth, and let it begin with me.
We are all enmeshed.
